The big names from Hollywood, Amber Heard, and Johnny Depp case as we all know have been suing each other. The case now entering the final week has turned up into a battleground to reveal the truth as both the sides are vehemently accusing each other of domestic abuse.
Mr. Depp (58) sued Ms. Heard (36) over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in which she referred to her as “A Public figure representing domestic abuse.” After over a year of legal procedure, Ms. Heard filed a countersuit against Mr. Depp alleging he of defaming her. The allegations that are being aired in the courtroom have already been heard in the British Case.
Mr. Depp lost that case that he had filed against The Sun newspaper. The newspaper had published a headline addressing Mr. Depp as a “Wife beater.” Amber Heard in her testimony accused Depp of “a controlling husband whose physical violence was often preceded by accusations of infidelity.”
While Mr. Depp accused Ms.Heard of, being “a mercurial partner who sought to instigate fights.” The case that started on April 12 is now entering the final week and will expect to appear before the Jury on May 27.
Why has Mr. Depp sued Ms. Heard?
It all started in 2019 when Mr. Depp filed a lawsuit against Ms. Heard in her 2018’s op-ed in The Washington Post under the headline “I spoke up against sexual violence-and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” In an application, Ms. Heard had mentioned being physically and verbally abused by Mr. Depp while they were in a relationship.
Mr. Depp in his lawsuit asserted that Ms.Heard’s contentions were an “elaborate hoax” that cost him his career and reputation. “Mr. Depp brought this action of defamation to clear his name,” as per his lawsuit.
Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard: the Verdict
Amber Heard, Johnny Depp’s ex-wife had defamed him in the year 2018. Ms. Heard in an op-ed wrote that she was a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” However, it also came to light that she was also defamed by one of her lawyers Johnny Depp.
In the latest development that has taken place in the case, the jury has awarded Mr. Depp $15 Million in compensation and punitive damages. Due to some legal restrictions, the court has limited the punitive damages verdict to $10.35 million. On the other hand, the jury has awarded Ms. Heard $2 million in damages.
Later after the verdict, Ms.Heard said that she was” heartbroken.” Ms. Heard tweeted,
“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.
“I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock at a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.”
“I believe Johnny’s attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive in the UK. I’m sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I have lost a right I thought I had as an American – to speak freely and openly.”
In his statement, Depp said, “Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me and also the lives of the people, who for many, many years have supported and believed in me, were forever changed. All in the blink of an eye.
False, very serious, and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me. It had already traveled around the world twice within a millisecond and it had a seismic impact on my life and career. And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.”
“My decision to pursue this case, knowing very well the height of the legal hurdles that I would be facing and the inevitable, worldwide spectacle into my life, was made only after considerable thought. From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome, I feel at peace knowing I have accomplished that.”
Johnny Depp also said that the best was yet to come and a new chapter had finally begun. “Veritas numquam perit. Truth never perishes,” he said.
