A total of nearly 200 Indian athletes competed for medals in 16 different sports during the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8.
During the last edition of the Gold Coast Olympic Games, Indian athletes won a total of 66 medals, 26 gold, 20 silver, and 20 bronze, to finish third overall behind hosts Australia and England, to finish third overall.
As a result, shooting, which contributed 16 of the 66 medals at Gold Coast 2018 as part of the Commonwealth Games program for Birmingham 2022, has been cut from the schedule.
It is also important to note that 135 of India’s total tally of 564 medals from the Commonwealth Games have come from shooting, which is more than any other sport at the Games. There are 30 medals that Indian shooters won during the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games – where India won a total of 101 medals in just a few days, which made it their most successful Commonwealth Games in history.
As a result of Neeraj Chopra withdrawing late from the CWG 2022 due to injury, India certainly fell one medal short of the gold medal it won at the Tokyo Olympics and the silver medalist at the world championships.
There were 61 medals that Indian athletes won at the Commonwealth Games 2022, 22 gold medals, 16 silver medals, and 23 bronze medals. In Birmingham, Sanket Sargar, the first Indian to win a medal, bagged a silver medal in the men’s 55kg weightlifting event, which was a first for the Indians. Jeremy Lalrinnunga became the first Indian man to clinch top podium at Birmingham after Mirabai Chanu won a gold medal at CWG 2022, while Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal at CWG 2022.
