In Pune, a couple lost their lives on Saturday evening when their bike was hit by a speeding Porsche, officials reported. The car was allegedly driven by a 17-year-old, the son of a prominent city builder. The minor, along with two others in the Porsche, was taken into police custody.
However, the district court granted bail to the minor within 14 hours of his detention. According to the police, the court granted bail as it did not consider the juvenile’s crime to be serious.
Koregaon Park
The incident occurred in Pune’s Koregaon Park as a group of friends were riding their motorbikes home after a party at a pub in Kalyani Nagar.
Upon reaching the Kalyani Nagar junction, the minor driving a Porsche collided with one of the motorcycles, causing its two riders to fall and tragically perish on the spot, as detailed in the FIR.
Subsequently, the car veered off and crashed into the railings along the roadside, as documented in the FIR.
A circulating video on social media captured a group of individuals assaulting the driver as he attempted to exit the crashed vehicle.
The victims, identified as Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, were confirmed deceased by Pune Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Manoj Patil. While Koshta succumbed immediately, Awadhiya passed away during medical treatment at a hospital.
“Both victims were returning from a nearby pub after a night out. The accused, a minor, has been apprehended. Medical examinations are ongoing,” stated the ACP.
An eyewitness, Amen Sheikh, recounted the accident, indicating that the Porsche was traveling at a speed estimated between 200-240 km/hour.
“I was standing with a rickshaw at night. The man and the woman were crossing the road on a bike. Suddenly, a Porsche car came at full speed and rammed them. Both were thrown in the air. The woman was thrown 10 feet in the air. The man’s ribs were broken, and he was not able to move,” he said.
“There were three boys in the Porsche car. One of them ran away. Later, the police came and detained everyone. All three were drunk. The speed of the car was around 200 to 240 km/hour,” he said.
The police filed a case at the Yerwada Police Station, citing violations under Section 279 (rash driving on public roads), Section 304(a) (causing death by negligence), Section 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others), Section 427 (committing mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and additional provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
